Close to 300 people attended the event and heard from Wallace and Iavaroni, who shared their own experiences in mentoring, and how their mentors helped them achieve their goals and successes. In addition, President of Business Operations Andy Dolich spoke about why this mentoring initiative is central to the Grizzlies Foundation and that because of these efforts, the organization was awarded the Steve Patterson Award for excellence in sports philanthropy. Grizzlies local owner Elliot Perry also spoke about his experience growing up in a single parent household and the importance of those adults who took an interest in his development.

The mentoring programs represented Tuesday were the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Memphis, Big Brothers Big Sisters, STREETS Ministries, Project Aware Mentoring Program, Memphis Athletic Ministries, Memphis City Schools CONNECT, Youth Villages, The Exchange Club Family Center, MIFA, Urban Youth Initiative, and the Memphis Mentoring Partnership.

While several mentoring programs recommend that mentors spend an hour a week with a mentee, some programs only require mentors to participate for an hour or two per month.

Mentors undergo mandatory training and orientation, and are matched with young people based upon common interests and hobbies. Mentors may indicate which age group with which they’re most comfortable; programs strive create successful matches, and accommodating the schedules, interests and preferences of volunteer mentors is a priority.
