Through the NBA Cares Program and Toyota Project Rebound, the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation unveiled the Grizzlies Activity Zone at Memphis Athletic Ministries (MAM) on May 29. The Activity Zone was made possible through a $55,000 grant from Toyota to the Grizzlies Charitable Foundation to help provide safe places for youth to live, learn, or play. Memphis is one of 15 NBA cities to receive such grant.
The Grizzlies Activity Zone is an area designed to keep children active and healthy in a safe, fun environment. Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay and guard Mike Conley along with nearly 50 children were on hand to help unveil the new Activity Zone. Gay challenged the children to games on the Zone’s new Wii Fit Nintendo System provided by Sam’s Club. Conley challenged Dominique Winfrey, a member of MAM to a competition on one of the Zone’s dance video games. Conley walked away victorious, leaving Winfrey begging for a rematch.
The dance and exercise video games are only a few of the elements that help create the Zone’s fun atmosphere. It will also be used as an area to host fitness assemblies through Get Fit with the Grizzlies, a fitness program designed to teach youth about getting active, eating right and making healthy choices in life. On occasion, Grizzlies players will use the Zone to discuss their fitness regimen and healthy eating choices with members of MAM as well as participate in the fitness assemblies.
In August, the Grizzlies Charitable Foundation will unveil the second addition to this project at MAM, a computer center that will be utilized as a tutoring and study area for school age children.
MAM provides a home away from home for 15,000 Memphis area youth in seven neighborhoods throughout the city. They have set a new standard for service and outreach for children and families throughout Memphis. MAM has been a Grizzlies’ community partner since 2001.
Toyota Project Rebound is a community initiative established by the NBA and Toyota. The program includes 15 hands-on community service projects that will be hosted by the NBA and WNBA teams, and will include court refurbishments, the creation of Learn & Play Centers, and other Legacy Projects.
